The United States still remains the only country in history to ever use an atomic bomb. Israel is one of only nine countries to currently possess nuclear weapons. Israel has also not put their nuclear weapons under the surveillance of the IAEA (international atomic energy agency) for inspection, while Iran has. However, both Israel and the United States have conducted military operations in Iran this past week over Iran’s development of nuclear weapons. While it is true, Iran has enough uranium to produce these weapons, there has been no hard evidence that they have them. So it seems hypocritical for the United States and Israel to be the nations who determine if Iran has a right to own these weapons or not.
Furthermore, let’s discuss why Iran is even involved in the war in the Middle East. Post World War II, after the largest genocide in history was committed on Jewish people by Nazi Germany, the United Nations determined that Jewish people needed a safe nation in which they could reside in and carry out their religion free of oppression. The UN proposed that Palestine, a nation that was under British control, be divided up into two separate states, one for the new land of Israel and its largely jewish population, and one for the current Palestinians and their largely Muslim population. The UN proposed a 45% 55% split of the land, 55% for Israel, 45% for Palestine. Arab leadership obviously declined the proposal, leading to the Arab-Israeli war. The war saw Israel take large control of what was once Palestinian land, more than the 55% that was proposed, and displaced many Palestinians into what is now Gaza. The war is largely responsible for why Gaza makes up over 2 million of Palestine’s current 5 million population.
After the Arab-Israeli war, and even still to this day, Israel see’s the remaining Palestinian land as holy land they have a right too. Between modern day and after the war Israel has bullied what is left of Palestine. They have done things such as take control of the West Bank, blockaded Gaza, and depriving them of basic human needs. They have limited Palestinians’ transportation to access things such as education and hospitals. Bottom line is Israel wants what is left of Palestine.
This constant oppression led to the questionably democratic election of Hamas in 2007. Hamas is a terrorist organization largely found in Gaza and is in control of Palestine‘s government. Because of their constant oppression, Hamas decided to invade Israel in October 2023, killing and capturing many Israelis. However, since then Israel has killed 40,000 Palestinians and seen 1,000 Israelis die, a 40 to 1 ratio. It’s also incredibly important to note that Palestine has no military. Israel has a top 20 military in the world, other than Hamas, Palestine itself is defenseless to Israel’s military attacks.
Iran‘s involvement in this conflict is because Iran has a large Muslim population. They see Israel and its occupants as land Palestine has a right to keep. Iran also feels that Israel has taken it from them. Iran also believes the oppressing Palestinians has gone too far. Iran does have a military and a means to help defend Palestine.
But this is far deeper than a war. There is a humanitarian problem in Palestine: many kids lack food and basic human needs. Israel has forced out anyone who has tried to open up food banks, or provide humanitarian aid to Gaza. Israel is also bombing hospitals and limiting medical care to people in Gaza. The median age is only 19 years old for the average resident of Gaza. Israel’s actions has led many scholars to label this attack as a genocide.
It’s important we don’t let the United States in Iran’s conflict distract us from the fact that people and Gaza need humanitarian aid because of Israel and their imperialistic hopes, and it’s important to understand that Palestine and its people have a right to live in peace free of oppression.
