As a woman approaches the ledge of a building, contemplating if she wishes to continue her life, she is confronted by Homelander, a fictional superhuman character from Amazon Prime’s The Boys. Homelander was sent there to save her from jumping. At first, he has a reluctant but willing tone to save her. Then news is broken to him that his superhuman love interest has died. He goes from reluctantly willing to forceful. His tone shifts, and he begins to insist that she jump. When the woman proclaims that she doesn’t want to anymore, he tells her that she no longer has a choice. “Oh God,” the woman says, trembling, realizing her life is no longer in her hands. “No, no God,” says Homelander, “the only man in the sky is me.” The woman is then thrown off the building. Homelander’s actions, both cruel and unjust, hold little reason to them. But they do prove him right in one thing. There is no God. There are too many contradictions to his existence.
First, we must establish what makes God, God. He is omnibenevolent (all good), omnipotent (all powerful), omniscient (all knowing), and omnipresent (all present). If one of these 4 pillars fall, then he is no longer a God, but rather just a powerful being. Without all four of these attributes, God cannot properly serve humans.
The first contradiction takes place with the claims that he is all powerful. The question then becomes, if he is all powerful, can he make a rock so heavy, even he can not lift it. If he can, then that means he can’t lift the rock, so he can’t be all powerful. If he can’t create the rock, then that is another thing that he can not do, either way, he can not be all powerful.
The other condition is a paradox created by Eppicerous called the Epicurean Paradox. The idea of this paradox is that God can not be all good, all powerful, and all knowing. Proof of this is seen in the fact that evil exists. Let’s revisit our earlier situation to explain. The woman was thrown off the ledge by Homelander simply out of rage. If God was all powerful, all knowing, and more importantly all good, he would have prevented the woman’s death. Because the women did die, one of the following claims has to be true. God knew the women would die, had the power to stop it, but didn’t, meaning he is malevolent. If that is not the case, then God knew it would happen, wanted to stop it, but didn’t have the power to, meaning he is not all powerful. If neither of those are true, then the final claim has to be true. God is all good, and all powerful (which has been established prior that he is not), but did not know the women would be thrown off the building, meaning he is not all knowing. Anyway you look at it, one of the claims has to be true.
One claim that often comes up is that God does not allow evil to happen, but rather it is human and their free will that is evil. However this approach also hits a wall, for God created free will, meaning he determined what humans can or can not do. For example humans can not fly, because god determined we could not fly. So if a human can throw a human off a building, then it must be because God allowed us to commit evil acts in our free will for he is the one who created it.
Furthermore, if God was all loving, and his love was so great and unconditional, as it says in Romans 5:8, then hell would not need to exist. Think of it like this, if you go on a first date with a woman and she tells you that she loves you, but says that if you do not love her back then she will burn you alive. One, does she really love you then, and two, do you really have a choice. Unconditional love is predicated on the idea that it does not matter the love in which you get in return, but rather that you love someone no matter what. The bible claims God loves you, but not loving his back in the greatest sin, one that will get you sent to hell. This is not unconditional love, and is not all loving.
Another question that arises in my mind about the bible is why was Jesus a man. If Jesus was sent as a representation of God he would not have been a man, for men at the time between 4-6 b.c committed most of the crimes, such as stealing and murder, which violates 2 of the 10 commandments of the bat. A woman would have been a better representation of God and his values. The argument of “no one would have listened to a woman during that time” holds no substance in the eyes of God, for if a person were to discriminate the message of God based on who was delivering it, then he or she would not be living up to God’s standard and would not be worthy of being saved. This leads me to believe that man created God, not the other way around.
I am no smarter than the average man or woman. I am not more capable of comprehending or researching than, so why can I see the flaws in God, while so many others do not. I believe the reason for this is related to the fear of death. People want to live forever in heaven as they are promised, surrounded by their loved ones. I often hear people say “What is the meaning of life if we die and there is nothing after”. I think that is the wrong outlook on life. The fact that we do have limited time is what makes everything valuable. It’s what makes spending time with people so important. Appreciate the world and what it has to offer you in your one life. We learn in economics that the less of something that there is, the more valuable it is. If we live in heaven forever, then we lose our purpose, we have no meaning anymore, we will be surrounded by the same people, doing the same things, forever. That is not eternal happiness, but rather imprisonment.
So do not be a good person because God told you too, don’t not steal because God told you not too. If that is why you don’t do something, then you are not a good person; only a fearful one. Do it because it’s the right thing to do. God might have proved he is not all good, but that does not mean humans have to. Finally, the absence of science does not prove the existence of God. If that were true, God is an entity that is shrinking by the day. I’ll leave off with a quote, “If you tell people there is an invisible man in the sky, they won’t question it. But if you tell them the paint is wet, they have to touch it to be sure” (Unknown).
